A solid catalog of 44 weanlings and 74 fillies and broodmare prospects will be offered for the Oct. 24 Northern Farm’s Mixed Sale at Northern Horse Park in Hokkaido Island.
The weanling catalog features two lots by Contrail, an unbeaten Japanese Triple Crown winner in 2020, whose first crop arrived in the spring of 2023. Twenty foals sired by Contrail were sold at JRHA Select Sale for ¥2,572,000,000 (US$17,986,014) in total, including a colt out of the City Banker mare Conviction, who was bought by North Hills for ¥520,000,000 (US$3,636,364), the highest price at the session.
Among the weanlings to keep an eye on are a Contrail filly and colt consigned as Hip 6 and Hip 11 respectively. Hip 6 is a daughter of 2019 Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) victress Mirth (Colonel John ), who was acquired by Northern Farm’s Katsumi Yoshida for $1.05 million at the 2020 Fasiig-Tipton November Sale.
Hip 11 is out of the Mineshaft mare Sheave, making him a half brother to 2016 Kentucky Oaks (G1) heroine Cathryn Sophia.
There are a collection of blue-blooded older fillies and mares out of training featured in this year’s catalog, including Blenheim Palace (JPN). The 3-year-old Real Steel filly, consigned as Hip 155, is the third foal of grade 1 winner Euro Charline, a mare Yoshida secured for $977,918 at the 2018 Tattersalls December Mares Sale.
Another featured broodmare in the catalog is Safari Miss. The 12-year-old mare, consigned as Hip 132, was a multiple group 1 winner in her native Argentina and is in foal to U.S. champion sprinter Drefong, the leading freshman sire in Japan in 2021.
