Through a pair of public disclosures posted to its website in recent days, the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit alleges that banned substances were found in horses trained by Michael Pappada and McLane Hendriks.
HISA reports that one of Pappada’s runners, Truckin Tommy , tested positive for the banned substance tapentadol (or one of its metabolites or markers) after a sixth-place finish in a maiden claiming race Aug. 8 at Presque Isle Downs. Pappada could face a provisional suspension but at this point is still active.
Sometimes marketed as Nucynta, tapentadol, is a strong painkiller with no known use in horses. HISA lists tapentadol as a banned substance that is an opiod analgesic.
In the other case, HISA alleges that Hendriks-trained Princess Javoncia tested positive for cocaine after finishing first in an allowance race Aug. 16 at Penn National Race Course. A provisional (immediate) suspension is in place against Hendriks, who has not started a horse since Aug. 21.
As a reminder, public disclosures are allegations. Both cases are active.
