Every two weeks, we recap the earnings leaders on the general sires list. And every two weeks we see some movement. But when we get into it, the same sire, Into Mischief , stands alone—and it’s not really close—at the top of the list.
This week we are going to take a different approach. Rather than examine the top earners by progeny winnings, The List will instead focus on the top sires by average earnings per runner. This week’s chart will compare the list at the end of 2022 to through Oct. 3.
Diving into this different category, the first thing that stands out is the difference in the rankings, with several sires who are not part of the overall earnings having a presence here.
Gun Runner stands above the field, just as Into Mischief holds a large lead over No. 2 Curlin ($13,447). Gun Runner’s progeny include Gunite , Echo Zulu , Il Miracolo , Vahva , and Disarm .
Gun Runner stood atop last year’s rankings for sires by average earnings per runner.
But after him, there are a lot of differences.
Good Magic , who was 35th at the end of 2022, moves into the top five at No. 4 on the power of his runners such as Mage , who won the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Good Magic was not the lone sire to make significant strides in the rankings from the end of last year. The biggest mover was Army Mule , who went from 59th to 10th. His offspring include One in Vermillion , Danse Macabre , and Klassy Bridgette .
Classic Empire climbed 32 spots to land the No. 14 position, led by his 3-year-old son and Arkansas Derby (G1) victor Angel of Empire .
Others who went from not ranked 10 months ago to holding positions in the top 25 are No. 16 American Pharoah (+26); No. 17 Bolt d’Oro (+39), No. 18 Candy Ride (+35); and No. 21 Justify (+41).
Meanwhile, sires who aren’t among the top 25 in total progeny earnings but have that designation for average earnings per runner are Pioneerof the Nile, War Front , Girvin , Great Notion , and Flatter.
Girvin is noteworthy in that in 2022 he was fourth among first-crop sires, a category in which he needed 11 starters. His starters that year averaged $36,734 per start. But he didn’t qualify for that ranking due to needing 54 starters. He had 52. At that average per starter, Girvin would have ranked 40th.
Several of the sires currently in the top 25 have died: Arrogate, Pioneerof the Nile, Flatter, and English Channel.
