Juddmonte announced Oct. 6 that defending Eclipse champion Elite Power , winner of the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), will take up stud duty alongside multiple grade 1 winner Mandaloun (Into Mischief ) upon retirement after competing in this year’s 40th edition of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The $2 million, six-furlong race is Nov. 4 at Santa Anita Park.
By Curlin , the leading Sire of grade 1 winners for the third year in a row, the striking chestnut colt sold as a yearling for $900,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale. Out of multiple graded stakes winner Broadway’s Alibi , his dam was runner-up in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and sold as a broodmare for $2.15 million. She hails from the family of champion 2-year-old filly Eliza .
Elite Power flashed his brilliance in his maiden win at Churchill Downs, drawing off by nine lengths, clocking the final eighth of a mile in :11 and change while being geared down to the wire. The final time for the seven panels was 1:21.06 and was the start of an eight-race winning streak. His next win came in an allowance race, also at Churchill, going a mile where he drew off by 3 1/4 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:34.19. His stakes debut came in the Vosburgh Stakes (G2) where he demolished the field, winning by 5 3/4 widening lengths. In front of a crowd of 85,834 fans at Keeneland on Breeders’ Cup Day, Elite Power defined himself as a champion with a decisive victory in the Sprint against a packed field which included five-time grade 1 winner Jackie’s Warrior as well as Aloha West , the previous year’s winner of the race.
Elite Power’s 2023 campaign started in Saudi Arabia, where he showcased his prowess against an international field, annexing the $1.5 million Riyadh Dirt Sprint (G3), leaving Gunite in his wake some 3 1/4 lengths back in second.
After the race, veteran jockey extraordinaire Frankie Dettori said, “He’s an (airplane). He took my breath away.”
Back stateside for his next start, he easily won the True North Stakes (G2) in a hand ride. The True North was followed by the A.G. Vanderbilt Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. In a hard-fought battle, against a worthy adversary in Gunite, Elite Power prevailed at the wire, notching his eighth straight victory.
Most recently, the Bill Mott trainee ran second to Gunite in the Aug. 26 Forego Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. To date, the Juddmonte color bearer has amassed earnings of $2,735,711 with a record of 8-1-1 in 12 starts.
He breezed a half-mile in :49.91 on Friday at Saratoga.
